Test Format

IELTS Test assesses all of your English skills — reading, writing, listening and speaking and is designed to reflect how you will use the language at the study, at work or in your daily routine in your new life abroad. IELTS test can be taken in two ways, one is the paper-based test and the other is a computer-based test. Candidate can choose the type of test he wants to take according to their wish and comfortability.

IELTS has two types of modules – Academic and General Training.

Academic Training: The Academic test is for those who want to study at an undergraduate, graduate or post-graduate level i.e. moving to abroad for their higher studies.

General Training: The General Training test is for those who want to migrate to an English-speaking country to work or to enroll in their training programs.

IELTS exam has four different parts –

  • Listening (30 mins/ 40 questions)
  • Reading (60 mins / 40 questions)
  • Writing (60 mins/ 2 topics)
  • Speaking (11–14 minutes).

The total test time is of 2 hours and 45 minutes. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking tests but Reading and Writing tests differ depending on the module chosen by the candidate. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are needed to be completed by students in one sitting without a break. The Speaking test can be chosen by the student to give may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.

Results are provided as band scores on a scale from 1 (the lowest) to 9 (the highest). Candidates are scored for each part of the exams– Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The results achieved from all the four parts then give an Overall Band Score. Scores for IELTS are valid for 2 years.
