TOEFL refers to the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL™) which involves the assessment of English proficiency of participating applicants, whose native language is not English. This examination tests their ability to understand and use North American English Language.

Most of the educational institutes located in the U.S. and Canada (around 2400) ask their prospective applicants for their TOEFL™ Scores. Applicants have to give the TOEFL™ test as a prerequisite for getting into these colleges and universities where English is used or required to get admission in their courses. Apart from colleges and universities, many government agencies, licensing authorities, certification institutions, exchange, and scholarship programs use TOEFL™ scores as the criteria to evaluate the English proficiency of people who do not have English as their first language.

TOEFL Exam Format

There are mainly two types of formats for the TOEFL test. The format which you want to take depends on your location and the location of your examination center. Most of the students prefer to take the TOEFL IBT test due to the availability of the Internet at their location, whereas examination centers which do not have Internet access offer the Paper-based Test (PBT).

Each section of the TOEFL test has a maximum score limit of 30, whereas the total maximum score of overall test is 120. Most of the universities require you to score minimum between 80-100. These scores are then posted online within two weeks of your test given date. You can view this score online at ets.org by simply creating your user ID and signing in. However, the TOEFL test also provides you the opportunity on the test day to select a maximum of four institutions to send your score for free. But you can send your scores to as many institutions as you desire for a nominal fee of US $17 per report. The official score report is mailed to your given address in around four to seven days after the receipt of your payment and request.
